Portrait Painting in Oil Instructor: Philip Ruehle, MFA new date TBA. Please call if interested.
All levels are welcome. In this class, we will be tackling many of the challenges that are encountered when painting the portrait. An emphasis will be placed on anatomy, color theory, brushwork, and glazing. While this course will incorporate general lectures and demos, it will mostly consist of one-on-one instruction in order to better serve and enhance the growth of each individual student. Bring a clear and detailed photograph with good lighting of someone you would like to paint. The first class will be a demonstration (no need to bring supplies to first class).

Paint: Titanium White Ultramarine Blue
Sap Green Cadmium Yellow Medium
Viridian Alizarin Crimson
Burnt Sienna Raw Umber
Cerulean Blue Cadmium Red Medium
Brushes: Filberts 2,4,6,8
Medium: Dammar Varnish (or Retouch Varnish) and Stand Oil, or any other medium that you may prefer
Surface: Gesso Panel or Canvas
Mineral Spirits: Odorless or Low Odor will be provided.
Botanical Art : Colored Pencil Independent Study

Thursday’s, July 11 - August 8. 2pm – 5pm. 5 Weeks.
This class is for students who have old projects to finish or new projects to begin. With the option of drawing from life or using photo references, work in a supportive atmosphere using traditional colored pencil techniques and focusing on composition as you develop your drawing. Bring drawing supplies and your subject or a selection.

Botanical Art: Painting Petals – Barbara Holmer, Artist/Instructor.
Six weeks, Thursday’s, May 16 – June 20, 2-5pm. For beginner through advanced, adult students. Botanical Art is a blend of art and science that is well suited to those who love detail. This class will focus on techniques used in botanical watercolor by painting pages of petals. Learn color mixing and a 3-layer approach to painting the subtleties and details of springtime flowers. Open to new and returning students.
$95 Member/$105 Non-member. $10 material fee due to instructor at first class.
Beginning Fundamentals of Blacksmithing – Saturday’s, May 11- June 8, 9am – Noon.
The Shiawassee Arts Center will again be offering the Blacksmithing class with Arthur Johns, instructing. This 5 week course will offer a comprehensive, hands on, overview of the art of Blacksmithing. Students will be introduced to basic forging and metal working techniques. These will include stock manipulation (both bar stock and sheet metal forming), basic tool making, traditional joinery and finishing techniques. . It will also offer insights into design development and execution. Students will be making some of their own tools, functional objects, and design and build their own individual projects. Students are required to furnish for themselves proper safety gear (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves and appropriate footwear). Classes will be held at Arthur John's Forge & Design Studio, north of Elsie.
Arthur is an artist/blacksmith, with a Master of Fine Arts degree and primarily works in forged iron or steel.

Adult Pottery – Thursday’s June 13 - Aug. 1, 6-9pm. No class on July 4 or July 18.
Six weeks of beginning to intermediate level pottery. Jim Reinert, Instructor. Various techniques of wheel throwing, hand building and glazing will be taught. Bring your tools, a notebook, disposable gloves and an old towel. Individual development is of primary importance. Come experiment with clay! Includes 25 lbs. clay, glazes and firings. In every bag of clay, there is a pot! Dress for mess.

Group Guitar Lessons at SAC!
Pat Carmody will continue to teach both children’s and adult classes this fall. Students will need to bring their own guitar. Pre-registration and payment required.
Students age 9-15 - Thursday’s 6pm – 7pm. Cost: $10 member/$12 non-member
Age 16 and better - Thursday’s 7:15 - 8:15pm. Cost: $15 member/$17 non-member
