(Ages 15 & up)
Earth, Water & Fire Pottery
Summer evening session will be on Thursday’s, June 11 - July 16, from 6-9 pm. 6 Weeks. Jim Reinert, Master Potter, Instructor.
Beginning to intermediate levels. Various techniques of wheel throwing, hand building and glazing will be taught. Bring your tools, a notebook and an old towel. An apron is optional. Individual development is of primary importance. Come experiment with clay! Includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes and firings. Dress for mess.

Drawing/Sketching for Beginners
(No experience or talent required) Philip Ruehle, artist/instructor
(new dates) 4 sessions – Tuesday’s June 2 - June 23. 4pm - 6:30pm.
Week 1: Gestures, how to sight angles, line quality and an introduction to the value scale
Week 2: Learning to block value.
Week 3: Further continuation of week 2, but with an emphasis on the rendering of drapery.
Week 4: An introduction to transparent objects in the still life.
Small supply list: Student's preference of an 11"x14" - 16" x 20" sketch book, a graphite pencil set that should at least contain a range from B-4B., kneaded eraser and a pink pearl eraser. Charcoal pencils and/or sticks are a possible option for the last two classes, but not mandatory.

Supplies needed: Chalk Pastels: a package of at least 36. Sanded pastel paper can be purchased from the instructor.

Fine Metalsmithing – 6 Week Session

Designed for beginners through intermediate.
A self-paced class designed to learn different aspects of metalsmithing. Bring a project you have been wanting to make or techniques to learn. The class will be designed around your skill levels. Forging, stonesetting, cuttlefish casting, sawing, soldering, fabricrating, hinges, resin/enamels, wirework, PMC and more are just a few of your options! No skills required. Beginners to advanced welcome! Some materials provided.

Book Arts – Fold, Stitch & Decorate
Learn the basics of bookbinding and finishing techniques in this summer series of four classes. Each session will be a new book structure or technique creating decorative books to give as gifts, saving cherished thoughts, photos, writing poems, haiku or journaling. Come join the fun! Fundamentals of Blacksmithing
Will be offered again in the Spring
The Shiawassee Arts Center will again be offering the Blacksmithing class with Arthur Johns, instructing. This six week course will offer a comprehensive, hands on, overview of the art of Blacksmithing. Students will be introduced to basic forging and metal working techniques. These will include stock manipulation (both bar stock and sheet metal forming), basic tool making, traditional joinery and finishing techniques. It will also offer insights into design development and execution. Students will be making some of their own tools, functional objects, and design and build their own individual projects.
Students are required to furnish for themselves proper safety gear (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves and appropriate footwear). Classes will be held at Arthur John's Forge & Design Studio, north of Elsie. If you register for this class, you will be furnished with directions to the studio. Arthur is an artist/blacksmith, with a Master of Fine Arts degree and primarily works in forged iron or steel, as a sculptor.

Jerry Power "Plein Air Pastel Workshop"
Capture the essence of Landscape painting in Pastel with master pastel artist, Jerry Power, of Beulah, Michigan. Jerry is a very accomplished and award winning pastel artist, specializing in plein air pastel work. Please bring along a few landscape reference photos to work from in case of inclement weather. Learn to increase your proficiency in several areas: making decisions, organizing materials, focusing quickly on a subject, measuring, eliminating nonessential detail and not repeating mistakes. Jerry has exhibited widely and his work can be found in numerous collections throughout the state of Michigan and the country.
