Recent paintings by Tom Nuzum of Byron and the Shiawassee Arts Council Artists Guild are on display at the Shiawassee Arts Center May 23 through June 18, 2006. The show is sponsored by Morgan and John Beilfuss of Home Office Realty.
Tom Nuzum’s career spans several decades and his award-winning work is on display in numerous galleries and private collections. A Professor Emeritus of Art at C.S. Mott Community College, Nuzum received a BFA and a MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California. He received a Fulbright-Hays Grant for Independent Work in Painting in Valencia, Spain. His most recent shows include the Axair Gallery in Southampton, New York and group shows in Ann Arbor and the Red Ink Studios in Flint. His paintings are also represented by the Ezair Gallery in New York City.
Nuzum’s work is generally figurative and on a large scale — a recent commission was a creation of a 45' long mural. He has been painting images of animals - mostly dogs - for almost ten years. A current series called "Summer Reading" is simply about his experience of living with dogs during the "dog-days" of his life. Regarding his paintings he says, "they are about a delicious drifting in and out of consciousness of sharing moments of meditation and sensuous sun, sand and color with our canine reading companions for whom books are important fashion accessories. And as we try to read our books, they are always "reading" the world, they are always reading us".
