The Shiawassee Arts Council awarded $2,300 in scholarships to eight Shiawassee County high school students at the 38th Annual SAC Scholarship Show held at the Arts Center last Sunday. This year 100 students from nine area high schools participated including Owosso, Lincoln, Corunna, Durand, Byron, Morrice, Perry, New Lothrop and Ovid-Elsie.

The 2010 $1,000 SAC Award was presented by SAC president, JoEllen Hartley to Riley J. Owen, a senior at Corunna High School. Her teacher is Shannon Dasen. Funds for this award are raised from the SAC's Annual Art & Antiques Sale.

The $500 Jerry Power Award was presented to Owosso High School senior, Zachary Walker. His teacher is Marti Liddle-Lameti. Funds for this award came from the family of the late award-winning pastel artist, Jerry Power, who passed away in 2009.

The family of the Chesaning patron of the arts, Liz McEwan, who passed away in 2008 donated a total of $500 in awards. A $300 Liz McEwan Family Award was presented to Mercedes Knapp, a Perry High School junior. Two $100 Liz McEwan Family Awards were presented to Sarah Kimble, an Owosso High School junior and Stepan Lorenc, an Ovid-Elsie High School senior.

The $100 Leone Thorne Award, named for the late SAC volunteer and board member, was presented to Lauren Berndt, a Durand High School senior. The $100 SAC Artist Guild Award was presented to Brad Guthrie, a New Lothrop High School senior. The Director's Award was presented to Nate Large, an Owosso High School senior.

For 38 years the Shiawassee Arts Council has offered scholarships to talented young art students. Since the establishment of SAC in 1972, more than $58,000 in scholarships and awards have been granted to provide the students with recognition and financial assistance in their artistic growth. The judge's for this year's show were professional artists, Karan Pinkston of Swartz Creek and John Mrozik of Flushing. Chairs of the show were SAC Art Education Director, Linda Ruehle and SAC Board Member, Brian Bruff. Volunteers were Jackie Bruff, Deb Gilbert, Anita Hammerle, Chris Macey, Alyssa Renwick, Philip Ruehle and Ginny Walker. Sponsors of the show were Baker College of Owosso, Doris Austin, Lori Bailey, Margaret Brown, Karen Friday, Sue Giberson, Michael Kovich, Laura Meiers, Carl & Jeanne Rossman, Peg Ryckman, Bob & Marion Weigold, Joy Welty, Pat Creager and Ginny Walker.
