2013 Shiawassee Arts Council's 41st Annual High School Scholarship Exhibit & Competition
$1,825 in Scholarships Awarded by Arts Center
97 Students from Eight Area Schools Participated
The Shiawassee Arts Council Awarded $1,825 in scholarships to eight area high school student at the 41st Annual SAC Scholarship Show and Competition held at the Arts Center on Saturday, April 20, 2013. A total of 97 students from Owosso, Corunna, Chesaning, Durand, Morrice, New Lothrop, Ovid-Elsie and Perry schools participated.
The 2013 $500 SAC Award was presented by SAC president, Jeannette Smith to Mallory Kennan, a Corunna senior. Funds for this award are raised from SAC's annual Art & Antiques sale.
The three Liz McEwan Scholarship Awards totaling $500 were presented to Ellie Kenealy, an Owosso junior who received a $300 award, Alayna Conklin, a Chesaning junior and Callie Dolsen, a Durand junior, who each received a $100 award. Liz McEwan, who passed away in 2008, was a patron of the arts from Chesaning. Her family has given these awards in her memory for five consecutive years.
A $200 Arlie & Rosemary Edwards Award was presented to Alexandra Greenfelder, a Chesaning junior. Family members have given this award in memory of their parents for two years. A $100 Jerry Power Award was presented to Dan Jackson, a Morrice senior. Award winning pastel artist Jerry Power passed away in 2009 and his family has given an award in his memory for four consecutive years. The $100 Leone Thorne Award was presented to Callie Dolsen, a Durand senior. Leone Thorne, a longtime supporter of SAC, endowed this award through her state after her death in 2007. Leone's friend, Karen Friday donated the scholarship in her memory this year. . The SAC Director's Award was presented to Joy Rhine, an Owosso senior and sponsored by Piper Brewer.
Two Barbara Baumgartner Cox Awards of $50 were presented to Brennan Armstrong, an Owosso sophomore and Noah Hawn, a Perry sophomore. Barbara Baumgartner Cox was the first art teacher at Perry High School and this award in her memory has been given for three years by her family. Two Shiawassee Artists' Guild Awards of $50 were presented to Tyler Young, a Corunna Senior and Leah Jones, an Owosso senior. Five $25 Friend of the Arts Awards were presented to Jessica Kennedy, a Corunna senior, Paige Merrill, an Owosso senior, Alexandria Kunik, a Chesaning senior, Brianna Scanlon and Ashley Stanley, both Perry juniors.
For 41 years the Shiawassee Arts Council has offered scholarships to talented young art students. Since the establishment of SAC in 1972, more than $64,825 in scholarships and awards have been granted to provide students with recognition and financial assistance in their artistic growth. The judge for the show this year was Carolyn Texera, a professional artist from DeWitt. She judged the work on originality, creativity, technical skill and presentation. Baker College of Owosso was the sponsor for this show.
